“Kill or be killed.” There was no middle ground in Ancient Rome. There were none, especially for those who had to deal with the complex and corrupt world of chariot races and gladiator fights. And most of the time not even for everyone else. Prime Video will tell all its charm and ruthlessness in the new TV series Those About To Dieavailable in streaming from July 19th, of which was released on official Italian trailer. The event is an unmissable one for many reasons, two in particular: the series has the screenwriter of Save Private Ryan Robert Rodat and the director of Independence Day Roland Emmerichwhile the cast includes the legendary among others Anthony Hopkins.

Those About to Die: The plot of the new TV series

Described as “an epic immersion in the historic arena of the Roman Empire”, Those About to Die takes us back to Rome in 79 BC, the richest city in the world, where a large flow of slaves is arriving from the growing empire as labor. The Roman population, bored, restless and increasingly violent, is kept in check by two elements: free food and spectacular entertainment with chariot races and gladiator fights – “bread and circuses“, as they said.

The series explores the world of these games, characterized by bloodlust, greed for money, power struggles and corruption. The races at the Circus Maximus are controlled by four Patrician-owned corporations: the Blue, Red, White, and Green factions, and, in Rome, having a share of these four factions is considered the most valuable thing. The plebs’ taste for entertainment becomes increasingly cynical and bloodthirsty, and a new stadium designed specifically for gladiatorial combat becomes necessary: the Colosseum. The size of the stadium, as well as the grandeur of the fights between gladiators and animals, is enormous, as is the crime linked to the thriving betting business. Underground, under the bleachers, thousands of people work and live and, among them, there are thousands who would die for the games.

Hopkins, Oscar winner for The Silence of the Lambs And The Father, plays Emperor Vespasian. They support him Iwan Rheon (Game of thrones) in the role of the criminal Tenax, Tom Hughes (The English) by Titus Flavian and Sara Martins-Court (Crimes in Paradise) of Cala. They are added to them Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Game of thrones), Jojo Macari (Sex Education), Gabriella Pession (Crossing Lines), Dimitri Leonidas (Foundation), Emilio Sakraya (Warrior Nun), Moe Hashim (Ted Lasso), Rupert Penry Jones (Whitechapel), Kyshan Wilson (Sea outside), Alicia Edogamhe (Summertime) and many others.
