«Hi mom, my phone broke, this is my new number, can you send me a message?». The message is circulating insistently these days on the cell phones of people who, in most cases, are well informed of the new method implemented by scammers to extract money. This prank a month ago saw a 76-year-old from Narna rush to transfer 2 thousand euros to the criminals, convinced that his daughter was in difficulty. In that case, the Carabinieri’s investigations made it possible to trace the perpetrators, two Ukrainians under investigation for aggravated fraud. In the province in recent months there have been a series of scams carried out by fake policemen and so-called lawyers who obtained gold and cash from the victims, completely dazed by the hypothesis that their son or daughter had ended up in trouble after having caused a alleged road accident.

In some cases, the police managed to stop the criminals, as happened in recent days in Orvieto, where the victim sensed the deception and called the police. Two policemen from the police station arrived and arrested the scammers. Meanwhile, the police and carabinieri continue to implement a series of initiatives to inform older people of the risks they run. The meeting of the deputy commissioner, Giuseppe Taschetti, with the elderly people of the Volta center is recent. “We must trust the police – insisted Taschetti – by always calling 112”. The Carabinieri command was also involved and in one year provided information on thefts and scams to 1,500 elderly people in Terni and the province.
