Heavy downpour hits the city, Palio di Siena postponed: here’s when the horses will race

The city is preparing to experience the emotion of the Palio tonight, with the hope that the weather will be milder

A sudden and heavy downpour forced to Palio di Siena postponed dedicated to the Our Lady of Provenzanojust as the horses were already lined up between the ropes. The event, eagerly awaited by citizens and tourists, has been postponed to todayWednesday 3 July, at 7.30 pm. The decision was inevitable: the tuff, which covers the track in Piazza del Campo, becomes impassable and dangerous when wet. The safety of horses and jockeys is always the top priority.

Il downpour It hit the square about a quarter of an hour after the horses and jockeys emerged from the entrance of Palazzo Pubblico, surprising the thousands of people crowded in the stands. A threatening cloud, already present during the historical parade, poured a veritable deluge over the city. The order of entry to the canape, established today by fate, will remain unchanged for today’s career: Pantera, Valdimontone, Nicchio, Giraffa, Civetta, Leocorno, Bruco, Oca, Onda and Lupa di rincorsa. This arrangement sees the two pairs of historical rival districts side by side: Nicchio-Valdimontone and Civetta-Leocorno.

Before the downpour, the starter Bartolo Ambrosione had already called the districts out of the ropes three times, sign of a particularly difficult move. The historical parade, which took place regularly before the rain, will not be repeated tomorrow. The last postponement of a Palio with the horses already between the ropes dates back to July 1991.when the cause was the onset of darkness after a very long move.

Despite the unforeseen setback, the mayor of Siena Nicoletta Fabio emphasized the excellent work done by the organizational machine of the Municipality: “No detail was overlooked, everyone worked to the best of their ability. The safety of our festival has always been our top priority”.
