1463 – Pope Pius II ratifies the treaty with San Marino which defines its borders (which have remained unchanged to this day)
1512 – With the Oath of Teglio, Valtellina was officially annexed to Grisons. He remained there until 1797
1544 – Kair-Ad-Din Barbarossa tries in vain to conquer Salerno, Amalfi and Minori.
1721 – The English doctor Zabdiel Boylston uses the variolation technique against smallpox for the first time on 180 patients in Boston
1743 – At the Battle of Dettingen George II defeats the French army during the War of the Austrian Succession.
1759 – British General James Wolfe begins the siege of Quebec City
1794 – Death of Austrian Chancellor Kaunitz, replaced by Foreign Minister Thugut, known as the War Baron
1833 – Quaker teacher Prudence Crandall is arrested for opening her private school in Canterbury, Connecticut, to black students.
1857 – In India, during the Sepoy Revolt, the Satichaura Ghat massacre takes place.
1861 – Italy – The Army Veterinary Corps is established

1871 – The yen becomes the currency of Japan

1893 – New York stock market crash
1894 – Karl Benz receives his patent for the internal combustion engine
1898 – Joshua Slocum completes the first solo circumnavigation of the globe
1900 – US military doctor Walter Reed begins his research to eradicate yellow fever
1905 – (14 June according to the Julian calendar) Mutiny of the crew of the battleship Potemkin
1916 – The Battle of the Highlands ends with the Austro-Hungarians suspending the offensive.
1917 – Greece intervenes in the First World War
1932 – King Rama VI of Siam (formerly the name of modern-day Thailand) signs the provisional constitution and the country becomes a constitutional monarchy. The sovereign was forced to grant the constitution after the bloodless military coup called the Siamese revolution of 1932, which took place on the previous 24 June
1944 – Second World War: in the Battle of Cherbourg the Allied forces occupy the important naval hub during the military operations foreseen by Operation Overlord
1950 – The United States decides to send troops to Korea
Milada Horáková, an opponent of the Czechoslovakian communist regime, is executed in Prague
1954 – The world’s first nuclear thermoelectric power plant is put into operation in Obninsk, near Moscow
1957 – Hurricane Audrey kills 500 people in Louisiana and Texas
1967 – The first cash withdrawal machine is installed in Enfield Town, London, at Barclays Bank
1969 – A series of demonstrations by homosexuals take place in New York, called the Stonewall Riots
1977 – France grants independence to Djibouti
1980 – The DC9 I-TIGI Itavia IH870, flying from Bologna to Palermo, departed two hours late, explodes in the skies north of Ustica, killing 81 people, including 13 children
1984 – Pierre Elliott Trudeau wins the Albert Einstein Peace Prize
1991 – Slovenia, which had declared independence two days earlier, is invaded by Yugoslavian troops, tanks and planes. The Ten Day War begins
Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour begins in Munich
1997 – Andrew Wiles wins the Wolfskehl Prize of 75,000 DM for solving Fermat’s last theorem
2007 – Tony Blair formally resigns as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to Queen Elizabeth II and leaves his home in Downing Street. He is succeeded by Gordon Brown
2008 – Bill Gates resigns as president of Microsoft Corporation, leaving his place to Steve Ballmer
2011 – Asteroid 2011 MD passes just 12,000 kilometers above the Earth’s surface.
