From the motivation: ”Nurit Peled-Elhanan works to change Israeli society’s opinions towards Palestine. His writings promote tolerance, diversity and the right to education. In 1997, her 13-year-old daughter Smadar was the victim of a suicide attack by a Palestinian bomber in western Jerusalem. ‘My daughter was killed just because she was Israeli by a young man oppressed and exasperated to the point of committing suicide and killing just because she was Palestinian. Both are victims of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Their blood mixed on the stones of Jerusalem, which have always been indifferent to blood,’ Peled-Elhanan said upon his daughter’s death.’ Sakharov Prize 2001.
