Yet another fire has broken out in the neighborhood of Escape near the nomad camp, already the protagonist of numerous environmental disasters in the past. The thick smoke and explosions have alarmed residents, who feel increasingly threatened by the continuing fires. «I’m a citizen of Scampia, we can’t stand it anymore with the fires they start here every evening. You die from inhaling these fumes. Tonight (yesterday for those reading this) there was a fire complete with explosions in the camp which is located along the external ring road behind the Secondigliano prison”, said an exasperated resident who turned to the deputy of green-left alliance, Francesco Emilio Borrelli.
The residents of Scampia are worried about their health and safety: «They dump waste of all kinds – say some local residents – including dangerous materials, and then set them on fire. Enormous environmental and public health damage is created in addition to the public danger situation it creates.”
Borrelli, who has long been involved in the fight against the «land of fires», underlined the gravity of the situation: «For years we have been denouncing the phenomenon of the land of fires and the degrading and illegal reality of these camps which are still tolerated while the occupants are killing themselves and everyone else with their poisons. Stopping this massacre – concludes Borrelli – is a priority. We need a prevention system through the use of video surveillance and drones and the definitive closure of the camps.”
