Explosion in Pievelunga, woman injured, house collapsed, update

Explosion in Pievelunga – A sudden roar interrupted the morning quiet of Pievelunga, a small hamlet in the municipality of Parrano, shortly after seven yesterday. The explosion, presumably caused by a gas leak, led to the collapse of a residential building and the injury of a 75-year-old woman.

The woman, who was in her apartment at the time of the explosion, suffered burns on several parts of her body. The building, a two-storey building, collapsed almost completely, while a car parked nearby caught fire due to the explosion.

The Orvieto firefighters intervened promptly at the scene of the accident, ensuring that there were no other people involved in the collapse. Meanwhile, the injured woman was urgently transported by helicopter to the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Perugia.

The flames that had engulfed the car were promptly put out by the firefighters, who also collaborated with a team from Città della Pieve to remove the rubble. In collaboration with the Civil Protection, a municipal operations center was opened to manage the emergency.

Also present on site, writes Claudio Lattanzi in La Nazione, were the mayor Valentino Filippetti, the head of civil protection of the Municipality of Parrano, Giuliano Santelli, and Giampaolo Pollini, technical-operational manager of the associated civil protection function of the south-west area from Orvieto, as well as the municipal civil protection group of Monteleone d’Orvieto.

Following the fire brigade’s report, the house adjacent to the one where the explosion occurred was declared uninhabitable. These apartments are believed to be second homes, and fortunately no one else was involved in the incident.

The first inspections carried out immediately after the accident and at the end of the firefighters’ intervention did not suggest causes other than a gas leak. Further investigation could provide more details on the exact causes of the gas leak.

The intervention of the firefighters ended at 7.40 pm, with the men of the Special Operations Group (GOS) removing the rubble and cooling the objects involved in the explosion. As mentioned, no one else was involved in the accident. This event highlights the importance of home safety and regular maintenance of gas systems.
