Adoption abroad and how to prepare children for the meeting with future parents: the interview with the vice-president of CAI

There is no adult’s right to adoption but there is that of a minor to have a family. Starting from this assumption today, on the microphones of SiracusaNews, with Vincenzo Starita, vice president of the Commission for International Adoptions, we talked about adoption abroad and how to prepare children for the meeting with future parents. Which is also the topic of today’s all-day conference organized by the Asa ets association (Association Solidarity Adoptions) at the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights.

The commission, as well as all the actors involved in this process, acts only in the best interests of the child. And the objective of the conference is to talk about the meeting, abroad, of the child with the couple of future parents. This is a moment as delicate as it is important which, with the support of professional figures, is essential to begin, with the right time, to weave a bond that will then become a family one.

The event is organized on the occasion of the twenty-five years of the ASA association, which according to the latest CAI report relating to 2023, is the second organization in Italy in terms of number of adoptions, 36. From its birth to today, the minors who have found the warmth and affection of a family are 1,284.

We therefore spoke with Vice President Starita about the rights of children but also about the procedures relating to international adoption, the costs which are certainly not small (around 20 thousand euros but depending on the country chosen), the times which are certainly not fast (no less than 2 years) and the considerable age of those who apply to start a beautiful and difficult adventure like this: 44 years old for her, 48 for him. In fact, the timing of the procedure cannot be predicted because it depends on the country of origin of the child and can concern both the time necessary for matching the intended parents and children and the adoption provision and, last but not least, the situation in the country can also influence.

Starita admitted the difficulties but also recalled that there is the possibility of reimbursement of at least 50% of the expenses incurred and that the Cai is providing a series of payments for the excessive waits of those who have been waiting since the pre-covid period due to the stop on adoptions.
