For two weeks the flame of hope remained lit, but in the last few days his condition worsened until the tragic epilogue. An 86-year-old man, Giuseppe Cammilleri, died at the Trauma center of Villa Sofia where he had been hospitalized on May 30, following an accident that occurred in Piazza San Francesco di Paola in Palermo, a few steps from the officers’ club of the Army. The driver who hit him, a 36-year-old woman who was driving a Lancia Y, is being investigated for vehicular homicide.

According to what was reconstructed that day by the municipal police, Cammilleri – a long-time resident of Palermo but originally from Licata – had been hit by a car while crossing the road near the pedestrian crossing. The woman behind the wheel, despite braking which left traces on the asphalt, was unable to avoid the impact. After the alarm was raised on 118, the elderly man was rescued and taken by ambulance to Villa Sofia where the first checks were carried out.

The doctors did everything possible to save him from death, but his clinical condition, which appeared delicate from the first moment, worsened day after day until his death on Saturday. The municipal police Accident Officers, who intervened at the site where the accident occurred, seized the vehicle while awaiting updates from the hospital. The exact dynamics of the clash that cost Cammilleri his life are yet to be clarified. The elderly man’s body was returned to the family to celebrate the funeral.
