Flurry of declarations after the cardinal’s words in the Corriere: the bishops did not lend themselves, but the conspiracy took place

The interview granted by Cardinal Camillo Ruini to Francesco Verderami, published yesterday by Courierrepresents — second Stefania Craxisenator of Forza Italia, Bettino’s daughter – «a dhistorical document of extraordinary importance. A testimony that unites the negative opinion on the Tangentopoli season to the maneuvers that followed, inspired primarily by Oscar Luigi Scalfaro and times a drop the first Berlusconi government which had disrupted the left’s victory plans.”

In the interview, in particular, Ruini confirms the episode mentioned in the book The Hill of Italy relating to a lunch at the Quirinale, after the summer of ’94, to which the President of the Republic Scalfaro invited Ruini himself and two other important cardinals, Sodano and Tauran, to ask them – so it is written in the book – to «help him bring down the Berlusconi government». But the three remained silent (“We didn’t consider the leader of Forza Italia a danger”, explained Ruini to the Courier).

Thus, the president of the senators of FI, Maurizio Gasparri, it’s very tough: «Ruini and the other leaders of the church obviously did not make themselves available to what appeared to be a real conspiracy in the Palace. But there was a conspiracy. Berlusconi has denounced it for years. Many have denied it but the cardinal’s testimony confirms it. I remember that Scalfaro is the same one who then went on TV to unified networks and imposed, with the famous “I’m not in it”, not to delve into the disturbing story of the huge amount of money that he allegedly received from the secret services.”

«Time is a gentleman“, comments the vice president of the Chamber, Giorgio Mulè. And again: «A further, authoritative confirmation of how for certain sinister worlds the will of the Italians has always been seen as an obstacle», the vitriolic post on X by the deputy Tullio Ferrante, undersecretary at MIT. “The fact that 30 years have passed does not diminish the importance of these revelations”, echoes the deputy secretary of FI, Deborah Bergamini. “Fortunately, our president Berlusconi, with his incurable optimism, has moved forward”, comments the party spokesperson Raffaele Nevi. For the deputy Alessandro Cattaneo, «Scalfaro went against popular will and beyond the powers of the Quirinale». And the deputy group leader of FI at Palazzo Madama, Roberto Rosso, he is clear: «Now the Italians will have a clearer picture of the fury there was against Berlusconi».
