“Free Lazio”: thousands of Biancocelesti ultras in procession against president Claudio Lotito

“Deliver us from evil”, “We want to win again”. And again: “The fans want to count”. These are just a few of many banners exhibited last Friday by thousands Lazio supporters I went down the streets of the capital to contest (for the umpteenth time) the president Claudio Lotito. The reason? A corporate management, according to the fans, not up to par of the traditions of the Biancoceleste club. The procession, organized by the ultras of the Curva Nord, met at Flaminio stadium, a symbolic place for the history of Lazio. And shortly after 8pm, they arrived at Milvian Bridge. The Police Headquarters – which authorized the demonstration – spoke of approximately 6 thousand people but the numbers after the departure of the procession increased and remained stable between 8 and 10 thousand units.

“At Lazio only two things matter, Claudio Lotito and Claudio Lotito”. Maybe one of the slogan most used by fans which highlighted even more the reasons for the protest. Not only. “Rome has seen the fall of popes, emperors, kings…other tyrants will fall. It’s just a matter of time”, read another banner. And then another, even more explicit: “Nothing against Baroni, everyone against Lotito”.

The sit-in protest has been announced for more than a week. And a statement also appeared on the social channels of the fan group la Voice of the North. A very active profile that gives voice to the people of Lazio. Relations between the Biancoceleste fans and the president have never been calm. In Lotito the fans have always contested the corporate management and the cost-saving choices when it was time to build the team. But the straw that broke the camel’s back was the hiring of mister Marco Baroni. The technician is, according to the ultras, low profile.
