Car explodes in San Marzano sul Sarno: four injured

A loud bang and then pieces of hot cars thrown meters away. The explosion occurred in the early afternoon, just before 3pm, in San Marzano sul Sarno, in the Salerno area. Suddenly, in a side street of Via Gramsci, a methane-powered car caught fire and exploded due to the very high temperatures. The explosion was extremely powerful and involved cars parked nearby, damaging them. The shock wave also exploded the glass of the balconies and windows of the condominiums. The shattered glass hit four people who were injured. The 118 health workers provided first aid, transferring one of the injured to hospital. The firefighters of Nocera and Sarno immediately intervened on site supported by a tanker.

The red helmets put out the flames and made the area safe as well as checking for any damage to the structures. Witnesses said they saw pieces of the cars, mixed with glass, shooting up at very high speed. Pieces of bodywork were found on the terraces of the upper floors. It is only by pure chance that no one was hit by the metal objects which, “fired” with power, by the force of the explosion, could have caused much more serious consequences. The Carabinieri and the emergency electricity service are on site for all the necessary checks.
