The accident took place last night near theWeeze airport, about 70 kilometers from Dusseldorf. Emergency teams, including four ambulances, rushed to the scene: images showed several victims receiving first aid on the street.

The Scotland fans had traveled on a flight from Edinburgh, which landed around 11pm in Germany, and had taken a rental car from the airport, a dark Citroen. But on their journey to Monkwhere the opening match of the European Championships will be played tonight at the Allianz Arena, they took the wrong side of the road and ended up crashing into a black Mercedes that was traveling in the opposite directionwhose driver – equally injured – was treated on the spot.

The dynamics of the events were clarified by a source to the Daily Record: “They landed in Weeze on a Ryanair flight from Edinburgh at 11pm. They picked up their rental car directly at Weeze Airport, packed several suitcases and set off, but forgot that in Germany you drive on the right“.

With this premise, their journey lasted very little: “At the airport, after a few hundred meters of driving, they collided head-on with a Mercedes. All five fans were injured, some seriously, and had to receive emergency medical treatment at the scene of the accident before being transported to various hospitals. Numerous rescue teams were on duty until 2am last night. The two vehicles were completely damaged and had to be rescued“, the source continued.
A spokesperson for the local fire brigade added officially: “Shortly after midnight, a serious road accident occurred on the airport ring road in which two vehicles collided head-on. A total of six injured people, two of them seriously, were treated by emergency services. We wish those affected a speedy and complete recovery“.

Scotland, who have never made it past the group stage in their previous eleven European Championship appearances, open the tournament against hosts Germany in Munich this evening. Many Scottish fans are expected in Germany to follow the team coached by Steve Clarke. The other match of the first round of Group A, between Hungary and Switzerland, is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon in Cologne.
