“The fire was very rapid, quite violent also in its effects and spread. To understand the dynamics, we need to do some in-depth analysis, but it was certainly a major fire, with unfortunately quite devastating effects.” This was stated by the deputy director of the Milan Fire Brigade Command, Daniele Panza, who was present at the site of the fire this morning. In fact, investigations by the forensic police are underway at number 8 in via Fra Galgario, in what remains of the workshop that exploded last night, and the firefighters are supporting the officers to get them safely into a building which, as highlighted by Panza , is “compromised, but is not at risk of collapse”. Investigations into the dynamics of the fire are still underway, but the fire brigade manager underlined the violence and rapidity of the explosion: “There was a communication stairwell and this actually created some problems but I repeat we still have to do all the investigations, we are in an initial phase. All the relevant investigations are underway, we are still evaluating to carry out all the findings. Forensics is now working and we are providing assistance, because the structure is compromised. We will do everything that needs to be done but at the moment we are still a work in progress.”
Panza then confirmed that “part of the building was not inhabited. There was the family who unfortunately died and another tenant who had problems but we don’t know there were other people.” When asked if the workshop on the ground floor had all the authorizations and was in order, the deputy commander replied “from what it seems, in short, there are no elements that would lead the activity to be under our control. We are carrying out all the checks and are not ruling out any possibilities but at the moment there are no aspects of this type.” Finally, whether at the time of the explosion, there were interventions by a worker or the owner of the workshop with the fire extinguisher, Panza replied: “These are all aspects that are the subject of further investigation. It will certainly be an aspect to pay attention to in the future but at the moment we have no elements.” In the garage “a normal vehicle caught fire but that remains to be seen and investigated further. We are still in the first part of the investigation, we will check this too.”
