France, Glucksmann takes a stand: “I will be with the union of the left”. Le Maire’s criticism was immediate: “Their program is a total delusion”

Raphael Glucksmann, who relaunched the Socialist Party at the European elections with his Place Publique movement, finishing third behind Marine Le Pen’s far right and Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance, announced this morning on France Inter that he supports “the union of the left”: “For me – he said – the only thing that matters is that the Rassemblement National (RN) does not win these elections and does not govern this country. The only way to do it is for there to be a left-wing union”. Glucksmann states that “Jean-Luc Mélenchon will not be the prime minister candidate of the left”, which on the contrary needs “a consensual and non-divisive figure”.

Criticism from the government

In the aftermath of the agreement reached for a “new popular front” of the left, and a few hours after the presentation of a common program, the Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire, harshly attacked the proposals of the left bloc. “The program of the new Popular Front is total delirium – he told France Info – it is a return to 1981 multiplied by 10, it is the certainty of downgrading and leaving the European Union”. In particular, he added, the proposed 60-year pension would cause a “guaranteed economic collapse”, “the return of mass unemployment for all French people” and “the bankruptcy of public finances”.
