L’anti-drug operation «Algiers», was a clear sign of confirmation of the presence of the State and the Institutions even in the neighborhoods apparently most on the edge of the city: an operation destined to destroy one of the largest and most dangerous drug dealing squares in the city.
The public prosecutor of the Catania DDA, Alessandro Sorrentino, had requested the conviction 360 years in prison for 28 Syracusans accused in the anti-drug operation called “Algiers”.
With the speeches of the lawyer Junio Celesti in favor of the defendants Concetta Puglisi, Alfredo Gugliotta And Alessio Cappuccio the oratory marathon of the defenders of the defendants involved in the “Algiers” anti-drug operation has ended. The defender asked for the reduction of the sentences imposed at the first instance trial of his 3 clients. In particular he asked to recognize the mitigating factor of partial mental defect Alessio Cappuccio who during the preliminary investigations was released from prison for serious health reasons and having visited a psychiatrist he was recognized as partially mentally ill. In the first degree Alessio Cappuccio he was sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison for drug trafficking.
The «Algiers» operation was completed by the Carabinieri of the operational unit of the provincial command on March 2nd last year. The investigations began in November 2018 and continued until July 2019. In this period of time, investigators managed to film and document the flourishing activity of dealing in cocaine, hashish, marijuana, crack and methamphetamine. According to the anti-mafia district prosecutor’s office, the via Algeri group had taken over the reins of illicit drug trafficking.
The investigators calculate a turnover of 25 thousand euros per week with profits so large as to be around 10,000 euros per day. The profits were substantial to the point of opening real negotiations for the sale of the drug dealing place to other criminal groups in the city. Income that was the result of a managerial activity that involved three families but which unraveled into a network of small-time dealers, lookouts, drug packagers without creating the slightest scruple about involving even minors.
