Vieste, Antonio Fabbiano murder: life sentence for Giovanni Iannoli

Giovanni Iannoli, 38 years old from Vieste, was sentenced to life imprisonment with 12 months of daytime solitary confinement for the murder of Antonio Fabbianowhich occurred on 25 April 2018, in the context of the mafia war between the Raduano and Perna clans for the criminal control of Vieste.

The sentence was issued this afternoon at the end of the ordinary trial at the Court of Assizes of Foggia. After about 4 hours of deliberations, President Mario Talani read the verdict of conviction for Iannoli, currently detained for another case in the Sicuracusa prison.

During previous hearings, Iannoli surprised everyone by intervening and confessing to two murders: that of Antonio Fabbiano, for which he was sentenced today, and that of Marino Solitro, which occurred nine years ago in Vieste (proceedings still pending before the Assize Court, with co-defendant the collaborator of justice Danilo Pietro Della Malva).

The Court accepted the request made by the public prosecutionrepresented by prosecutors Ettore Cardinali of the Bari DDA and Rosa Pensa of the Foggia prosecutor’s office. In their closing statement, the magistrates had requested life imprisonment and 12 months of daytime isolation for the murder of Fabbiano, and a 15-year sentence for the attempted murder of Michele Notarangelo, who survived a deadly ambush. The legal representatives of the family (lawyer Diego Petroni) and of the Municipality of Vieste (lawyer Michele Fusillo) had also joined the request of the public prosecution. On the other side, the defense (lawyers Giulio Treggiari, Michele Arena and Ippolita Naso) had requested the application of mitigating circumstances and the exclusion of the contested aggravating circumstances.

According to the reconstruction provided by Iannoli, Fabbiano was killed because the 38-year-old believed that the boy had been ordered to kill him by the repentant boss Marco Raduano. Iannoli wanted to get ahead of the commando, killing Fabbiano with a Kalashnikov near the port, with the help of an accomplice who in turn was killed a few weeks later. Furthermore, he tried to kill another young man from Vieste who managed to escape the assassins. Iannoli had also attempted to assassinate the then boss Marco Raduano, who however miraculously managed to survive. For this procedure, called “Check the king”, Iannoli was convicted both in the first instance and on appeal.
