416 – The praefectus urbi of Constantinople, Ursus, organizes shows in the city theater to celebrate Honorius’ victory over the usurper Priscus Attalus
1228 – Frederick II leaves Brindisi for the Sixth Crusade
1389 – Ottoman forces defeat the Balkan Alliance at the Battle of Blackbirds’ Plain, paving the way for the Ottoman conquest of southeastern Europe (see Vidovdan)
1519 – Charles V is elected Holy Roman Emperor
1635 – Guadeloupe becomes a French colony
1651 – The Battle of Beresteczko begins between Poles and Ukrainians, the largest battle of the 17th century
1838 – Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom is crowned
1841 – The first performance of the ballet Giselle takes place at the Opéra National de Paris.
1846 – Adolphe Sax invents the saxophone
1883 – The first European power plant was inaugurated in Via Santa Redegonda, Milan
1894 – Labor Day becomes an official holiday in the USA
1914 – Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este and his wife Sophie are killed by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip; the episode becomes the casus belli of World War I.
1916 – Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht are arrested after the failure of an international strike and sentenced to two years in prison.
1919 – The Treaty of Versailles is signed, officially ending World War I

1976 – A group of PFLP terrorists hijack an Air France plane with 248 passengers on board.
1990 – Three paintings by Vincent van Gogh are stolen from a museum in Den Bosch, the Netherlands.
1997 – Boxer Mike Tyson is disqualified for biting off part of his opponent, Evander Holyfield,’s ear.
2004 – Post-war Iraq: two days earlier than expected, due to the tense climate caused by the series of attacks, the CPA in a surprise move cedes control of the country to Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, a former collaborator of the CIA and MI6.
2005 – Pope Benedict XVI opens the Beatification Process of Pope John Paul II, which will end with his beatification on May 1, 2011. An extraordinary event for a pontiff to be beatified by his successor
2006 – Italian basketball player Andrea Bargnani is selected as the number 1 pick by the Toronto Raptors in the NBA draft. It is the first time in the history of American professional basketball that the first overall pick in the draft is European.
2008 – Pope Benedict XVI, on the two thousandth anniversary of the birth of Saint Paul, opens the special Pauline Jubilee Year, in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, together with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I
2012 – The wreck of the Roma is found off the coast of La Maddalena.
