Elections, the center-right takes everything: the outgoing mayors fail

Out of six mayors elected yesterday, in the 2024 administrative round, five are directly attributable to the center-right and the government parties in both Palermo and Rome, in some cases with new political axes, even if no one or almost no one has inserted a “flag” in their lists.

The result of the polls, both as regards the European elections and for the renewal of local administrations, in fact delivers the image of a territory that is still firmly governed by Forza Italia, Fratelli d’Italia and Christian Democracy, with local shows of strength also when the clash was “fratricidal”. An example is what happened in Campobello di Licata, where two portions of the centre-right clashed (one, linked to Michele Termini, the other, majority, to Vito Terrana) with a victory marked mainly by the DC in favor of the now new mayor who he prevailed by around 200 votes over the Dem – 5 Star – candidate De Luca Antonio Pitruzzella but above all over the former mayor who was supported among others by the Brothers of Italy. In the end, as MP Lillo Pisano says, Meloni’s party can make up a “poker” of 4 out of six candidates – together with the other centre-right parties -.

The South calls the North, both alone and in association with the other opposition acronyms, it has lost in the events that “count”, but it has made an excellent showing, for example in Racalmuto, where Salvatore Petrotto was able to cherish the victory for a long time, but then left the field in Calogero Bongiorno for a handful of preferences. To weigh, numbers in hand, some important additions among the candidates for the city council but also the split vote in favor of Petrotto.

The candidacy of Liborio Gaziano belongs entirely to the centre-right area, and against many predictions he beat the outgoing mayor Domenico Gueli, while Milco Dalacchi in Naro is more civic-minded and supported by an unprecedented bipartisan axis, bringing together exponents of Brothers of Italy and the Democratic Party, ultimately obtaining a significant victory over Maria Grazia Brandara. Victory for the centre-right also in Alessandria della Rocca, with Micciché beating the former city secretary of the PD Montana.

A separate discussion applies to Caltabellotta, where the current mayor Marciante is a CGIL trade unionist without however having political roles in the centre-right and who, in his own list, included various types of sensitivities.

The population of those who do not choose is growing

When the polls closed on Sunday 9 June, only 45.41% of the 44,080 eligible voters (around 20 thousand people) went to vote for the local elections. A figure also decreasing compared to the past, although overall not so significant: except for the peaks of Naro (-3.75%) and Caltabellotta (-2.20%) everywhere the minus sign follows percentages of less than 1%. Obviously, the figure for those who went to choose their representatives in the European Parliament on a provincial basis was obviously even lower.
