Bark Air arrives, the first (luxury) airline for dogs: here’s how it works, the routes and prices

To demonstrate how stressful cargo travel can be for a pet, Bark Air CEO Matt Meeker personally traveled in a dog crate in the cargo hold of a jet.

Say goodbye to cages and cargo holds! From today dogs can travel comfortably in the cabin alongside their owners with Bark Airthe first American airline which focuses on the well-being and comfort of our four-legged friends. Born from an idea of the Bark company, already known for the production of pet food and toys, Bark Air presents itself as an innovative and luxurious alternative to traditional hold flights.

Of course, the price is not for everyone, on the contrary: a one-way ticket costs $6,000 to $8,000 (around 5,500-7,400 euros), depending on the route. But Bark Air promises an unforgettable travel experience for dogs, who will be able to fly in the cabin next to their owners, without stress and with all the comforts. “Too often dogs are denied travel, confined to a bag, a cage or they suffer the stress of flying in the hold“, the company said. “Bark Air presents a more fun and humane option.”

The first flight of Bark Air took off on May 23rd from New Yorkwith destination Los Angeles: the company already serves also London and Paris, and plans to expand its route network in the future. To ensure an exclusive experience, each jet hosts a maximum of 10 dogs, each with their own human companion. Additional tickets can be purchased for other family members. To travel with Bark Air, your dog must have up to date vaccinations and a compliant microchip. Once the flight has been booked, the crew will contact the owner (who must be at least 18 years old) to collect information on the dog’s size, any allergies and socialization preferences. On the day of departure, dog and owner they will be able to arrive at the airport only 45 minutes before their flight for a quick check-in. The owner can bring with him a hand luggage of 22 kg and a bag.

Before boarding, there are dedicated areas outside the plane for your dog to do his business. During the flight, the pet will be served a thirst-quenching drink and will be able to move freely in the cabin. Bark Air also offers pheromones and calming treats, noise canceling headphones and relaxation vests to help your dog adjust to the pressurization of the cabin. The on-board staff is available to play with the dogs, but during take-off, landing and turbulence, the dogs must remain on a leash. To demonstrate how stressful traveling in the hold can be for a pet, the CEO of Bark Air, Matt Meeker, personally traveled in a dog cage in the cargo hold of a jet: “I don’t know why anyone would choose to do this to their dog, there has to be something better,” Meeker said. Bark Air aims to lower flight prices in the future: the hope is that this is only the first step towards a change in the general travel approach of our four-legged friends.
