Media, Turkey wants to join the BRICS

There Türkiye has asked, in recent months, to be able to join the Brics, the international organization of emerging economies founded in 2009, which already includes Brazil, China, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russia and South Africa. This is supported by three different Turkish officials, quoted by the Middle East Eye portal. “We do not see BRICS as an alternative to NATO or the European Union (EU),” said one of the officials quoted by the portal, adding that “however the stalled EU accession process encourages us to explore other economic platforms ” and underlining that Ankara would “like to be part of all multilateral platforms, even if there was only a small opportunity to benefit from it”.

If Turkey joined the BRICS it would become the first NATO country to be part of the organisation. In recent days, the head of Ankara’s diplomacy, Hakan Fidan, had made it known that he plans to participate in the summit of Brics foreign ministers, which will be held tomorrow and Tuesday in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. “We all, of course, welcome the growing interest in Brics from our neighbors, including important partners such as Turkey,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference in Moscow this week, as reported Anadolu, adding that Ankara’s interest in joining the Brics will be one of the topics on the agenda at the summit tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, chaired by Russia, but that the organization is unlikely to satisfy the interest of all the countries wishing to join to the group.
