(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, JUNE 06 – In the fourth quarter of 2023, wholesale gas prices in Europe fell by 67% compared to the same period in 2022, reaching a peak of 55 euros/MWh in mid-October before falling to November and December to reach 30 euros/MWh. This is certified by the quarterly report on the gas market published by the European Commission, confirming “a significant recovery” of the gas markets in the last three months of last year after the peak of the energy crisis driven by Russia’s war in Ukraine. The average quarterly price was 41 euros, 24% higher on a quarterly basis, but 57% lower on an annual basis. As for the retail price of methane, the quarterly data certify an increase of 2% (compared to the third quarter), but still 31% lower than the fourth quarter of the previous year. In 2023, the average retail price of gas was 116 euros per MWh, 17% lower than in 2022 (139 euros/MWh) and 55% higher than 2021 (75 euros/MWh). Overall, the report also confirmed that overall Russian gas imports fell to 43 billion cubic meters in 2023, compared to 79 billion cubic meters in 2022 and 150 billion cubic meters in 2021. At the same time, the share of electricity generated from renewable sources (44%) exceeded the share from fossil fuels (32%) for the first time. (HANDLE).
