Environmental protection: yesterday, today, tomorrow – Economy and politics

The June 5th is celebrated World Environment Day. This year, Sweden will host the celebrations. The chosen theme is “One Earth”.

In Europe, more and more care for the environment translates into particular attention from agriculture. Starting from the Green Deal, passing through the Farm to Fork strategy, the sustainability it’s kind of the heart of the new one Pac, the Common Agricultural Policy. Three cornerstones: fight against climate change, protection of natural resources, improvement of biodiversity.

The CAP aims to achieve the goals environmental in a socially and economically sustainable way for farmers, rural communities and allEuropean Union all in all.

Informing citizens about the CAP is theobjective Of CAP4AgroInnovationThe project promoted by ImageLine® with the support of the European Union (IMCAP Program). The heart can be summed up in one word: agroinnovationwhich is expressed through keywords such as young farmers, financing, digital agriculture And innovation. In this way we can also make an important contribution to the System of Knowledge and Innovation in Agriculture (Akis).

The journalist Barbara Righini also spoke about Akis, with Simona Cristianoresearcher of Creates Center for Policies and BioeconomyIn the podcasts right away.

CAP, environment and resources

With the first relation annual of Strategic Plan of the CAP 2023-2027 – developed by collaboration between Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (Masaf), Agea Coordination And National Rural Network (Rrn) – is regulated on a new model linked to the implementation of the Plan and its performance.

The first year of implementation – with financial year 2023 running from 1 January to 15 October 2023 – does not take into consideration all the activities functional to the start of the payment of advances for most of the CAP interventions.

The overall disbursements offinancial year 2023 they amount in total to 114 million of Euro. To these must be added the recoveries within the 2007-2013 rural development programming relating to amounts unduly received, for a total of 11.2 million of Euro. Resources that will be made available to the regions for interventions rural development. For the sector of bees – fundamental for the conservation of biodiversity – for example the resources amount to over 4 million euros of EU funds (around 14 million of public spending, considering the national contribution). The sector olive growing received disbursements in terms of advances for over 26 million euros. The sector fruit and vegetables obtained the disbursement of advances for over 83 million euros.

The most financially significant activities concern the disbursements made starting from 16 October 2023, which fall precisely in the 2024 financial year. In particular, direct payments which have an annual allocation of approximately 3.5 billion of Euro. The number of agricultural companies that have submitted applications amounts to over 721 thousand units, covering a total of approximately 10.5 million hectares of usable agricultural surface.

The adherence of farmers to the rules is also fundamental Ecoschemes, albeit with the need to start some reflections on the basis of the first year of implementation. This will allow full use of the financial resources allocated as part of the interventions relating to direct payments.

On the side, interventions under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) calls for tenders have been activated for more than that 4 billion euros public spending (26% of the planned). Calls for tenders have been opened for over 40% of the budget foreseen for agricultural interventions linked to climate and environmental measures.

The package dedicated to green agriculture is a central element of the CAP. For example with respect to the fight against climate change, in the last agricultural policy period 2014-2020 they concerned approximately 104 billion euros (equal to 25%). Among the interventions, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has led to better management, especially of livestock farming, where investments have been made in the storage and treatment of manure, and in the protection of forests and soil protection.

Environmental protection (and not only), some virtuous examples

National Rural Network makes accessible a series of in-depth information on Mrs they Srb. The Sra concern commitments regarding the environment and climate. While the Srb are the natural constraints and particular constraints that affect some farmers (and therefore the compensation) in certain areas with effects on agricultural production.

Examples of care for the animal welfare are achieved thanks to the support of research in Europe. With 600 million, two partnerships are set up in key sectors for agroecology and animal health and welfare. They were launched under the Framework Program for Research and Innovation Horizon Europe. The EU budget will cover up to 50% of the costs of these two partnerships, while the other half will be covered by the consortium members. With the’agreement the commitment to accompany farmers and all other actors in the agri-food chain in the transition towards sustainable agricultural and food systems is also made clear. The point will be create And hold up a network of living laboratories and research infrastructures, with a key role in accelerating the adoption of agroecology across Europe.

A beautiful reality where animal welfare is the company’s business card The Boara Agricultural Society in Cologna Veneta, in the province of Verona. Here, as he explains in video below is the young agricultural entrepreneur Giulia Agostinirecently inaugurated a new one stallalso financed thanks to funds from the PSR of the Veneto region (2014-2020), for the resting phase, where the calves can settle in before the fattening phase. Ventilated and air-conditioned spaces, large boxes, studied nutrition, water at the right temperature and lights with photoperiod: everything to increase animal well-being and reduce the need for antibiotics

Giulia Agostini talks about what animal welfare means for La Boara Società Agricola

In Piedmont, land of ricefor example there is the project “Good practices for biodiversity in rice fields” of theRegional Agency for Environmental Protection. From a certain study it emerges that the paddy field, having in its water cycle a factor that influences the survival of plant and animal species of conservation interest, in recent years is suffering a substantial loss of diversity through agronomic practices such as dry sowing, the use of laser levelers, the elimination of water from the paddy chamber in correspondence with the application of pre- and post-emergence herbicides. One of proposed solutions is, where a dry period is necessarily needed, the creation of fairly wide and deep lateral ditches in the paddy field (minimum width 80 centimeters and depth of 100), arranged so as not to hinder the movements of agricultural vehicles. So that, even during dry periods, the presence of refuge areas for aquatic plant species, amphibians, fish, insect larvae and other invertebrates can be guaranteed.

Speaking of rice, we interviewed a few months ago Alice Ceruttifarmer from Cascina Oschiena (Crova, province of Vercelli). A company where management has been set up in such a way as to respect the environment, conserve and restore it, with special attention to biodiversity.

For fifty years for the environment

The care of the Earth, one Earth, is a I commit which is valid every day. Established during the Stockholm Conference in June 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Environment Day began to be celebrated only two years later. So this year it will be fifty years. L’objective And raise awareness the world population.

At the same time, the Assembly ofUN he also established Unep, the United Nations Environment Programme (United Nations Environment Programme) to coordinate and organize all initiatives. The path led, in 2021, to the start of the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.
