At 11.45 am in Piazza della Memoria a delegation of students, teachers and school managers will participate in the moment of solemn remembrance of the victims organized by the magistrates and lawyers of Palermo in their robes.

Afterwards, at midday, the human chain will start which, in a symbolic embrace between the world of school and justice, will surround the court singing the Mameli anthem. Among those present, as reported Southern Gazette, those of the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, of Justice, Carlo Nordio, and then the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, the president of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, Chiara Colosimo.

“After 32 years, the memory of the tragic end of Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca and the escort personnel Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro still remains alive in the generation – like mine – who were astonished witnesses of that massacre. We must all commit ourselves so that even young people, even as time passes, recognize themselves in the example of courage and tenacity with which the Sicilian magistrate wanted to conduct his commitment in the fight against the mafia. And he often did it in the isolation and ostracism desired by colleagues and state institutions.” This is declared by the Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, Nello Musumeci.

“To Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo, Antonio Montinaro, Rocco Dicillo, Vito Schifani. The thoughts of all honest Sicilians on the day of their memory”. This is stated by president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani.

Capaci massacre, Mattarella’s words

Here she is statement by President Sergio Mattarella on the massacre: “The Capaci attack was an attack that the mafia knowingly wanted to carry out on Italian democracy. A criminal strategy, which after a few weeks replicated the same, inhumane horror in via D’Amelio. The reaction of the institutions and the Italian people was firm. The result was a mobilization of consciences. The life lessons of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino became part of the best ethics of the Republic.

Thirty-two years after that tragic 23 May, it is necessary to first of all remember the sacrifice of those who were barbarically killed: Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo, Antonio Montinaro, Rocco Dicillo, Vito Schifani. Together with them we remember Paolo Borsellino, Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Walter Eddie Cosina, Vincenzo Li Muli, Claudio Traina. Witnesses of legality, whose name remains marked with indelible characters in our history.

Their names are an affirmation of commitment to a definitive victory over the mafia cancer and our heartfelt thoughts go to their family members who preserve their memory and moral legacy.

As Falcone and Borsellino argued, the Republic has demonstrated that the mafia can be defeated and that it is destined to end. The commitment to fighting it never fails. Attempts to pollute civil society and intimidation of economic operators are always lurking. The Day of Legality that is being celebrated is intended to be a sign of common responsibility. It is necessary to maintain high vigilance. The institutional antibodies, the social mobilization to prevent mafia organizations from finding support in gray and compliant areas, cannot be weakened. The legacy of Falcone and Borsellino is a living heritage that belongs to the entire national community. Carrying on their work means working for a better society.”
