Perugia, 23 June 2024 – ‘extra time’ begins this morning at 7am in five municipalities of theUmbria. Up for grabs, until the polls close at 3pm tomorrow, is the title of mayor which over 235 thousand voters will have to choose in five cities, starting with Perugia and then go to Foligno, Gubbio, Bastia And Orvieto.

It goes without saying that the most anticipated challenge is that of the capital, given that it will probably also have an important impact on the next autumn regionals. But the real ‘game’ first of all and once again is the one aboutturnout. The five municipalities involved in the first round recorded inflows varying between 65 and 71 percent, as shown in the graph. And everyone’s goal is to at least bring back to vote all those who showed up at the polling station a fortnight ago: an unlikely gamble given that historically the second round for the election of the mayor shows dizzying collapses.

An example above all is that of Perugia in 2014, the only time in which it went to extra time: in the first round 88,956 people voted, equal to 69.77% of those entitled to vote. Fifteen days later, 62,911 showed up (a good 26 thousand fewer), not even reaching half of the total eligible voters (49.34%). Percentages confirmed throughout the country and which this time too should not differ much. More or less the same thing happened in Bastia in 2019: 11,988 voters in the first round, 8,677 in the second round (51.38% against 71%).

In Foligno, however, 5 years ago 61 percent of voters showed up for the ballot, in Gubbio 54.82 and in Orvieto almost 65 percent: all lower percentages than in the first round. As for the “head to head” ones, we’ll talk about Perugia on the next page, while in the city of Quintana there is Stefano Zuccarini, outgoing mayor and candidate of the centre-right who is competing against Mauro Masciotti of the centre-left.

There is great curiosity for Gubbio, where for the first time in decades the left will not lead the city: in front are Vittorio Fiorucci candidate of the centre-right and Rocco Girlanda at the head of a civic list. Bastia also returns to the ballot after five years: Erigo Pecci (centre-left), challenges the outgoing mayor Paola Lungarotti of the centre-right, with the civic Catia Degli Esposti who has made it known that she will support Lungarotti Finally, the challenge on the Rupe is very heartfelt: the outgoing mayor Roberta Tardani (centre-right) has a clear advantage over Stefano Biagioli (centre-left): but extra time has always been a game in itself.
