Inmate throws gas canister, officer injured in Ucciardone

An inmate threw an incendiary canister in the Di Bona prison, formerly Ucciardone, in Palermo and injured an officer. This was reported by Gioacchino Veneziano, regional secretary of Uilpa Sicily. “It could have ended up worse – says Veneziano – if the staff on duty had not had experience and professionalism. An Italian prisoner, in disciplinary isolation, locked up in the ninth section, using a piece of steel obtained from a piece of furniture, hit the armored vehicle with the intention of breaking it down, threatening the officers who intervened. He then threw a gas canister at a policeman who was injured and taken to the emergency room. The flames started a fire which was put out with the fire extinguishers of the staff on duty.”

According to the trade unionist, the situation in prisons has become difficult. “We are at war – concludes the secretary of Uilpa Sicilian penitentiary police – in prisons, and politics together with the administration must take note of the management failure, because episodes of violence cannot now be managed in prisons, but it is time to think seriously to structures suitable for containing subversive subjects, replenishing the workforce. In Sicily, as certified by the department, there are 800 agents missing.”
