Fires in Caivano (Na) on 20-21 May, Arpac monitors dioxins and other pollutants

Fires in Caivano, on 20 and 21 May, Arpac monitors air quality, new inflows of dust from the Sahara

Double intervention by the environmental agency in Caivano: after the start of investigations for the fire on May 20th at a metal processing company, yesterday the technicians of the Arpac provincial department intervened again in the municipality north of Naples, in collaboration with the firefighters, for another fire that broke out in the afternoon near a Roma camp (via Clanio).

Please refer to the press release released yesterday for the report of the first of the two interventions.

The second fire involved various types of waste abandoned on the ground: it was possible to identify clothes, remains of household appliances, mattresses and tyres. It broke out around 5.30pm and by 9pm it appeared almost completely extinguished by the firefighters’ operations.

Since this morning, a second high-flow sampler has been active near Via Clanio to determine the possible presence of dioxins and furans in the atmosphere, after the one activated in the municipal area for the previous fire.

From the examination of the available data from the air quality monitoring stations closest to the two fires, widespread exceeding of the daily limit for PM10 was noted on 20 May, however caused by a general influx of dust from the Sahara. For the rest, in the period in question, no exceedances of the legal limits were found for the pollutants monitored.

Further results of the ongoing investigations will be released as soon as they are available.
