The firefighters responded to Volterra (in the province of Pisa) for the collapse of a portion of the ancient ones medieval walls. It happened this morning, Sunday 5 May, in the San Felice area. A woman is was injuredstruck by ricochet of a stone. They arrived on site municipal civil protection volunteers, law enforcement, 118 And fire fighters: to avoid the involvement of other people, one was alerted dog unit. Three families have been evacuated and inspections are being carried out in the area to avoid further collapses. The collapse is close to Porta San Felicein via della Petraia: a portion of the ancient walls was affected by a landslide with the consequent collapse of the masonry works on the street.
Some witnesses would have heard a sudden roar. The collapse would have been due to a structural failure and the debris invaded the provincial road 15 which is now in the section it is closed to traffic. The inspection has concluded and the area has been fenced off, in anticipation of other small “domino effect” collapses.
On January 31, 2014, a 30 meter section gave way of the ancient walls due to an exceptional wave of bad weather, with heavy rain. The following October, with works completed in record time – thanks to the intervention of the Tuscany Region and the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, works worth 5 million were financed, contracted and carried out -, the stretch of via Lungo le Mura was inaugurated rebuilt after the collapse and returned to use by citizens. A second phase of interventions then followed with the consolidation of the slope of the Viale Trento e Trieste wall.
