Antonio’s relatives and friends have no desire to give up Pagnanothe 26-year-old from Sannita Hill who lost his life in February 2020 after a series of surgeries at the clinic Saint Rita of Benevento.
A story that began 5 years ago, November 2019, with the boy’s hospitalization for the removal of a retroperitoneal cavernous lymphangioma.
“A routine operation – confided Mayor Iapozzuto – there are many of them and they are not even invasive. It is not a tumor, but a sac that must be emptied and then closed, all in a short time and with minimal hospital stay.”
In this case, however, the surgery triggered everything else with complications that led to Antonio’s death after months of suffering and other interventions to try to recover the situation.
A death that was not accepted by the relatives and friends who, this morning, found themselves in front of the Court of Benevento to ask for justice and ensure that there is not another filing but “that those responsible for an inexplicable death can be identified.”
“I am here – began the mayor of Colle, Michele Iapozzuto – to be close to the pain of an entire community. We want justice and we want to understand what happened with the firm belief that those responsible will be identified and stopped so as not to be faced with unnecessary deaths. Healthcare facilities must have certain requirements to be able to carry out certain interventions, starting with resuscitation with the appropriate professional figures. In Antonio’s case there was superficiality in the diagnosis and in intervening without the appropriate tools, in addition to negligence in dealing with the problems created after the first intervention. And we also had confirmation of this after the assessment of some luminaries.”
There are many in front of the Court, silent and composed, but determined.
“We will never allow such a dramatic event to pass over in silence. Unfortunately for Antonio we can’t do anything more but if we are here it is to ensure that other cases like Antonio are avoided in the future. It is a civil protest to protect the health of unfortunate people who cannot rely on suitable structures with professionals inside. Facilities like those where our fellow citizen died must not be opened if they cannot guarantee health. We are on the side of justice and we believe that it will triumph in the end.”
One fact, however, is objective. There is something that still doesn’t work if people are forced to take to the streets with placards to assert their rights.
“We must take action on healthcare in a decisive manner because there are still deaths like this. Not all families can protest, civil and criminal cases have costs that many families cannot bear. And often it all ends in silence.”
This will not be the case, the small community of Colle Sannita has decided to keep its head high and its voice strong to have the answer to all the reasons for an absurd death.
