Liberty Media is also taking over MotoGP, announcement soon

That thin line that divides Formula 1 and MotoGP could definitively vanish, uniting two of the most followed categories on the international scene under a single stars and stripes roof. Formula 1 and MotoGP are in fact closer than ever, given Liberty Media’s interest in also acquiring the two-wheel category. The American giant’s interest in MotoGP, whose rights are held by Dorna Sport, promoter of other two-wheel categories such as WorldSBK and MotoE, had already been clear for months but in the last few hours, as reported by Financial Timesthis interest would have been transformed into a real proposal and into an acquisition worth 4 billion euros.

Acquisition for 4 billion euros

According to what the Financial Times reports, Liberty Media’s proposal, of over 4 billion, including debts accrued in the post-pandemic years, would have satisfied Dorna, which had already received other proposals, such as that from Qatar Sports Investments, the group supported by state of Qatar. However, the Spanish group would have preferred Liberty Media to these who would only be waiting for the official announcement, expected in the next few days, perhaps in conjunction with the third MotoGP round of the season in Austin, to be able to begin his journey.

Liberty Media’s move comes from the experience gained over the years since the acquisition of Formula 1. The category has grown together with Liberty Media, reaching double the initial purchase value, bringing the sport closer to a different audience, which the former patron of F1, Bernie Ecclestone snubbed. The intent for Liberty Media is obviously to do the same with MotoGP too. Globalize a sport with enormous potential and make it grow progressively. We remind you that this year in Formula 1 the calendar longest in the history of the category. A choice also born from Liberty Media and which earned the group quite a bit of money.

We will see when the agreement arrives and above all if Liberty Media will manage to escape the regulatory control which, in 2006, had precluded the dual ownership of F1 and MotoGP to CVC Capital Partners, because it was not in line with European antitrust legislation.
