Barber, McLaughlin race wins, 1-2 Penske

Double for team Penske at Barber Motorsports Park, where Scott McLaughlin doubled last year’s success by preceding, after scoring pole, his teammate Will Power in a two-lap chase following a spin by Christian Rasmussen. In the third IndyCar round valid for the championship, Roger Penske’s pair reacted to the penalties received during the week using a three-stop strategy. At the end, both riders, as well as Linus Lundqvist behind them, were able to push freely. Satisfaction also for Lundqvist, the first podium in IndyCar for the Ganassi team.

Felix Rosenqvist finally finished at the top after another positive qualifying in fourth position, best among the drivers with the two-stop strategy and good at outwitting Alex Palou in the final stages despite the soft tyres. The Spanish champion was fifth, followed by Christian Lundgaard, Santino Ferrucci, Colton Herta and Marcus Armstrong.

The day of several of the usual protagonists was disastrous. Scott Dixon finished fifteenth after being “backed” off the track by Graham Rahal. Josef Newgarden was also off the track, sixteenth. Disaster for the McLaren team. Pato O’Ward in fact hit Pietro Fittipaldi in the early stages, before colliding with teammate Theo Pourchaire towards the end, while Alexander Rossi lost a wheel halfway through the race, subsequently retiring. Retirements also for Sting Ray Robb, strong against the barriers but without consequences.

With Alabama’s eighth place, and the simultaneous misfortunes of others, Colton Herta gained the top of the rankings. Good performance for Luca Ghiotto, on the verge of the top-20 in his first appearance in the series. Competitive in the second part of the group, he only encountered a minor off-track exit, which he promptly recovered.
