Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree has won over international critics, the ratings on Metacritic are excellent and in general FromSoftware’s work has been praised by professionals and the public. But obviously there is no shortage of those who think differently and a real review bombing against Shadow of the Erdtree has started on Steam.
At the time of writing, the rating of Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree on Steam is average, based on 39,000 reviews: 25,000 positive and 14,000 negative. The latter complain above all about the very high difficulty, the terrible balance and the technical problems especially on the Steam Deck, which apparently are making the experience not entirely pleasant. Digital Foundry has confirmed that Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is not optimized very well on PC, inevitably patches and updates will arrive soon that will improve the situation.
As far as difficulty and balance are concerned, however, many negative reviews seem to come from those with little experience with FromSoftware’s games, so much so that I found Shadow of the Erdtree extremely punishing and far too difficult. It must be said, however, that to access the DLC you still need to have played Elden Ring up to a rather advanced level, so on closer inspection it is therefore difficult for a Shadow of the Erdtree player to be surprised by the difficulty of the DLC.
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is the DLC with the highest rating ever on Metacritic, so much so that it has surpassed the two expansions of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt, on Steam, however, the situation is different at least for the moment. In the next few hours we will understand whether the global opinion will remain average or whether it will change positively or negatively.
