Did you know that there is an EVO version of the historic one Mitsubishi Pajero? This dates back to the early 2000s which was built to meet the homologation requirements of the Paris-Dakar Rally. Just over 2,600 examples were produced, making it difficult to find an example in good condition.
One of these special variants ended up up for auction on Bring a Trailer, a unique opportunity for any enthusiast. This is a Pajero Evolution imported from Japan in 2018 and purchased by the seller earlier this year. Painted in Sophia White and with approximately 98,000 kilometers travelledthis example features bright red mud flaps and a black, gray and red Evolution livery on the sides (Mitsubishi was ordered to pay a billion dollars in compensation to a motorist in the United States).
Contrary to what you might think, the Pajero Evolution does not feature the famous 4G63 four-cylinder of the Lancer Evo, but a 3.5 liter V6 with 275 hp. The engine sends power to all four wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission, a dual-range transfer case, a locking center differential, and limited-slip differentials at both the front and rear.
Cosmetic changes over the standard model include flared fenders, modified bumpers, hood vents and a large roof spoiler. It rides on 16-inch wheels with Continental TerrainContact H/T tires. Inside, the cabin features Recaro seats, a cassette radio, automatic climate control, and faux carbon fiber accents.
Mitsubishi Pajero will return to us with a restyling scheduled for 2027: it will be a premium SUV based on the electric platform of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Equipped with a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine and an S-AWC all-wheel drive system, it will be larger than the Outlander with a length of more than 4.9 metres.
