Iran Votes, Pezeshkian and Jalili Lead – Middle East

The latest results of the vote counting of the presidential elections held yesterday in Iran see the reformist Massoud Pezeshkian and the fundamentalist Saeed Jalili in the lead, with 5,354,000 and 4,875,269 votes respectively: this was announced this morning by the spokesperson of the State Election Command , Mohsen Eslami, quoted by IRNA.

According to the Revolutionary Guards-affiliated Tasnim news agency, 40 percent of eligible voters have participated in the election so far, with Pezeshkian receiving 42.6 percent and Jalili 38.8 percent of the vote.

The other two candidates in the race, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Mostafa Pourmohammadi, obtained 1,620,628 and 95,172 votes respectively. The Tasnim agency added that none of the candidates will get 50%, which will most likely lead to a run-off on Friday 5 July between Pezeshkian and Jalili. Official data is expected today from the Ministry of the Interior.

Iran: ‘Attack on Baluchistan vote, 2 officers killed’

In Iran, “two police officers were killed in an armed attack by miscreants against a car carrying ballot boxes in Jakigour, in the province of Sistan-Baluchistan”: this was stated by the Iranian police in the province, quoted by the official agency Irna.

According to the statement, the attackers – probably separatists from Baluchistan – wanted to take over the ballot boxes with the ballots cast for the presidential elections. No one else was injured in the attack, police added.
