Second and final stage of the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series in Hamburg, where the men’s and women’s tournaments will be played from Friday 28 June.

A day of light and shade for the Azzurri, with the men’s team able to show off with two wins out of two matches, while two clear defeats arrived for the girls’ national team coached by Diego Saccà.

The men’s ItalSevens led by Matteo Mazzantini managed to get the better of Great Britain and Ukraine, beaten 31-17 and 22-14 respectively, and will challenge France at midday on Saturday 29 June to close the group. The Azzurri and the Transalpines are both undefeated after the first day and their clash will determine the pairing for the quarterfinals.

In the other groups, meanwhile, Georgia, Germany, Portugal and Ireland are leading the rankings, all with two victories out of two games played.

The adventure of the Italian team of ItalSevens so far has been on a lesser note, beaten 26-0 by both Spain and Belgium. The final match of the group against Turkey is scheduled for 9.52am, which should represent an opponent definitely within the reach of the Italian team.

Qualifying for the quarter-finals as one of the best third-placed teams is difficult, but a rather large result against the Turkish team could allow the girls to snatch one of the top 8 places at the end of the group stage.
