Jannik Sinner will come to Wimbledon 2024 facing Yannick Hanfmannduring the late afternoon of Monday 1 July. This is the second tournament as world number one for the Italian tennis player, once again on grass after the title he recently won in Halle. The South Tyrolean starts as the favourite and could face Matteo Berrettini in the second round: his debut at the Championships is highly anticipated after the semi-final in the previous edition. Sinner-Hanfmann, despite undoubtedly representing a top match, will not be played on Center Field of Wimbledon, as the organizers have decided to schedule the match on Campo 1.

Sinner-Hanfmann on Court 1 and not on Central

Il plan on the Center Field will offer the challenge between Carlos Alcarazwinner of the 2023 edition, and Mark Lajal, Estonian in the draw after three qualifying rounds. After the match with ‘Carlitos’ protagonist from 2.30 pm, the spotlight will be on the home team first Emma Raducanu against Renata Zarazua and then Coco Gauffseeded number two in the women’s seeding opposite her compatriot Caroline Dolehide. World number one Jannik Sinner will therefore play on Court 1 in the third and final match of the day. This is a choice of the organizers: as expected, the reigning champion will open the program on the Central, i.e. Alcaraz, followed by a British favorite of the public, Raducanu and one of the favorites to reach the end of the women’s draw, i.e. Gauff.

Sinner on Field 1, why?

Sinner will play on Court 1 and, in all likelihood, this is a strategic choice by the Wimbledon organizers. If in day 1 there will be two women’s matches, with the reigning men’s champion opening the program, in day 2 Instead, two ATP protagonists will presumably take to the field, such as Novak Djokovic e Andy Murray. The first, recovering from a knee injury, will challenge Vit Kopriva; the other, a true idol of the London public, will have to deal with Tomas Machac in what will be the last Wimbledon match of his career, even though his participation is in doubt due to back problems. The missing match on Centre Court, on Tuesday, will be dedicated to the champion of the 2023 edition, namely Marketa Vondrousovachallenger to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Scheduling Sinner’s match on Court 1 and not on Centre Court is certainly peculiar, but it reflects the traditional Wimbledon program: in all likelihood, the world number one will be under the spotlight on Centre Court starting from the eventual second appearance on the British grass.
