Euro 2024, drama-Scamacca after the exclusion: “I ended up at the psychologist”

The March tour to the USA saw Italy face Venezuela and Ecuador in two friendly matches, both winning 2-1 and 2-0 respectively. He had not been called up in the double match involving the United States Gianluca Scamacca, who however responded with a great end to the season by taking the Europa League in Dublin with Atalanta against Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.

That failure to be called by coach Luciano Spalletti, however, was an important lesson for improving the mental health of the former Sassuolo and West Ham striker: “Not being called up to America helped – his words in a recent interview from the retreat in Iserlhorn, Germany – it sent me to the psychologist.” Spalletti “did very well, I didn’t deserve that call and he was right not to call me”.

Then onto the next one European upon us, Scamacca spoke of Italy as “a young group, which has started a new cycle and which has taken time to bring out our strength – he added – We are ready and our strength will come out in this European Championship. I’m fine, I hope to help the team as best as I can and get as far as possible.” The next opponent, next Saturday, is called Albania, coached by the former Barcelona and City full-back Sylvinho: “It will be a difficult match, at this point all the matches are difficult, here are the teams that are here deserve to be at the European Championship – the attacker continued – But Italy will have to focus above all on themselves and give their best in this match”. He then turned his thoughts to Gasperini, who has made him grow during this season : “If I’m here so much it’s thanks to him, this year he helped me and managed to strike the right chords to make me click, I owe a lot to him.”
