Julian Mertens he will no longer be able to ride in a group again. Just a year ago, the Belgian from Bingoal WB he had been involved in a bad training accident, due to which he remained in a coma for a few days, had suffered numerous fractures in the upper part of his body and had undergone several operations, including two on his spine. A very serious injury, therefore, after which the 26-year-old had to go through a long rehabilitation, which however allowed him to return to cycling last winter and had sparked in him the hope of being able to run again. However, this unfortunately will not happen.

In fact, the runner himself announced on his profile Instagram who is forced to end his career here, which began in 2020 among the ranks of Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise after racing as an Under-23 with the development team of the then Lotto-Soudal: “1 year later… unfortunately I won’t be returning to the group. I did everything I could, but the injuries were too serious for me to fully recover“, wrote the Belgian, then thanking all those who have supported and supported him in these years and in the last difficult months.
