A childhood in the countryside and a single, great dream: to become a singer. Al Bano, born Albano Carrisi, was born in the 1940s in Cellino San Marco, 6 thousand souls in the province of Brindisi, and while his father wanted him to follow in his footsteps as a farmer, he was guided by his passion for music – and his obsession with Sanremo – going far beyond that childhood dream.
History
Precisely to pursue it, at the age of 17 he left school, the teacher training institute in Lecce, to move to Milan. «My first job was painting doors on a construction site in Giambellino», he says in a long interview with Repubblica. “I made do by sleeping on the construction site, until the manager told me I couldn’t do it anymore.” Then 8 months as a waiter, without ever a day off, at the Ferrario in the Piazza Duomo area. «Meals were insured, however, and between salary and tips I earned around 25 thousand lire a month: with 10 thousand I paid for the pension where I slept, the rest I sent home. But I wrote to my mother that I worked at the Municipality of Milan, she was proud of this.”
Then the turning point and the undeniable success. With one goal always in mind, even now that she is 80 years old and has a new album in the works: Sanremo. «As a child I waited for him to learn all the new songs. In 2025 I would like to be there for the last time.” Maybe paired with Checco Zalone: «A duet would be beautiful, after him with Francesco De Gregori». A thought also goes to his wife Loredana Lecciso, with whom everything is going “Very well, even though it is difficult to put up with someone like me”.
