On 30 June 1963, an anonymous phone call to the police headquarters alerted them that there was an abandoned car in Ciaculli, an agricultural village south-east of Palermo. The bomb squad extracts a gas cylinder from the passenger compartment and makes it safe. Every danger seems to have been averted, but when the trunk is opened, the car explodes.

The book by Mariaelena Porzio is entitled “I had already decided”, which tells of lives suspended between everyday life of self-sacrifice and a spirit of service, in a context of violence and coercion. A crescendo of revenge, ambushes, shootings and explosions. behind which there is the Caculli massacre, the mother of all massacres, a very violent war between Cosa Nostra families, triggered by the distribution of contracts behind which is the Palermo of Salvo Lima and Vito Ciancimino.

The book will be presented at 10.30 on Friday 28 June in Room 99 of Palazzo Branciforte, headquarters of the Sicilia Foundation, in Palermo. Dialogues with the author will be: Vito Lo Monaco, president emeritus of the Pio La Torre Study Center; the journalist Franco Nicastro; the writer Domenico Cogliandro.

The same parterre will be guests of the second edition of the “D’Accia Book”, at 5pm on Monday 1 July in the municipal hall, in Piazza Matrice, in Casteldaccia. Both presentations take place in collaboration with the Pio La Torre Study Center.
