Warehouse fire in Reggio Calabria, 40 families evacuated: investigations

Reggio Calabria – Forty families from the ‘Spirito Santo’ neighborhood of Reggio Calabria were temporarily evacuated by the Fire Brigade due to a fire in a shed containing electrical equipment. The flames spread just before midday and work is still underway to complete the safety of the area. The fire almost destroyed the property and investigations are underway to discover the cause that started the fire.

On site, firefighter teams from the Reggio Calabria Command were engaged in the fire in the approximately 200m2 warehouse with a metal load-bearing structure, insulated panel walls and sheet metal roofing. Teams from the headquarters, detachments from Villa San Giovanni and Melito were involved in the extinguishing operations with the support of water supply trucks, self-protected vehicles and a rescue officer to coordinate the operations for a total of 9 vehicles and 25 Firefighter units. The flames completely involved the structure causing its structural collapse. The high temperatures and thick smoke caused by the combustion also damaged the external facades of some buildings located nearby, making it necessary to evacuate 40 families as a precaution. The intervention of the firefighters was able to contain the fire, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby homes. Currently, the situation is now under control and the last outbreaks are being extinguished and the site is being made safe. No injuries were reported. Investigations are underway into the origin of the fire, no hypothesis has been ruled out at the moment.
