Sunrise is always a wonderful sight. In the ancient city of Herculaneum, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, between the narration of ancient eras and the intertwined sounds of Mediterranean peoples and traditions, the experience is unrepeatable.

Unique in Campania is the Archaeological park of Ercolano where yesterday at 5.30 “The spectacle of dawn – Inventions for three voices” by Coop Culture was staged (reruns on 20 July and 31 August). In addition to Herculaneum, the itinerary has already been hosted by the Miramare Castle Park in Trieste, and will be held in the archaeological parks of Ostia Antica, the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento and Selinunte.

Immersive and multi-sensory experience in which participants were taken for a walk through time, among the cardoons and decumani of the ancient Roman city, by special guides who explained the habits and customs of the ancient peoples. All interspersed with musical performances by the trio formed by Marina Bruno with Enzo Pietropaoli on double bass and Daniele Sepe on saxophone. Archaeologists and art historians, including the director of the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, Francesco Sirano, guided those present in some of the symbolic places of the UNESCO site.

They are not missing stories of great deeds and daily life in Roman Herculaneum. Thus the stop on the main street of the city where a silo was shown in which over 200 kilograms of bread were found. Bread brought to mind food and director Sirano, as a guide, recalled that in ancient Rome at dawn the city had already been operational for a while, the rhythms being different from ours: what for us is lunch, the ancients had it at 10 while dinner was at 16.

Another stop at the Casa dell’Albergo, with the vegetable garden in which a charred pear trunk was found, so the same environment was recreated; a visit to Bicentennial House and the Domus of Neptune and Amphitrite, so called because of the discovery of a mosaic. Stories about the villas, the shops, the public areas where food and drink were consumed.

The entire journey was then interspersed with evocative musical moments. From the music of Roberto De Simone, Benjamin Britten. WA Mozart, Gabriel Fauré, Jansug Kakhidze and songs from the popular tradition of Campania, Sardinia, and Portugal. A very exciting journey through time and art, which ended when dawn had already given way to a sunny sky. “Visiting Ercolano is always a unique experience,” commented director Francesco Sirano, “and it is at all hours. This is why we decided with Coop Culture to offer this exclusive experience. A few days ago we reopened the Antica Spiaggia and it is an experience not to be missed because it allows you to relive the only sea front of a Roman city.”
