Armed assault in Sassari, loot of several million euros

SASSARI, 29 JUNE – The loot from the armed assault by a commando of 20 men against the Sassari headquarters of Vedetta 2 Mondialpol is estimated at several million euros. The final count could arrive only on Monday. A robbery with an excavator used to break down the wall with a large pneumatic hammer and then to take away the money with large construction bags carried to the site by the same robbers who fired, at chest height, at least 150 shots against the headquarters of the institute and its employees and against the police. The forensic police have in fact found approximately 150 cartridges from short weapons (such as pistols) and long-barreled weapons (such as Kalashnikovs). According to the findings of the Flying Squad, led by director Michele Mecca, the bandits – all with their faces covered, gloves and bulletproof vests – also modified the Fiat Ducato used to escape with the loot: the roof was cut off to unload the bags directly into it with the arm of the excavator, which was then left at the site of the assault. Now the investigators, who are combing central and northern Sardinia in search of the criminals and their tracks, will also examine the images from the cameras in the area and the Mondialpol surveillance circuit in search of elements useful for tracking down the bandits.
