Water crisis and deaths at work, Uil meets in Agrigento

The Executive of the UIL Territorial Chamber of Mayors of Agrigento was held yesterday, with the occasion of the approval of the 2023 final budget and 2024 budget, issues of union policy were discussed that were naturally monopolized by the water situation in the province of Agrigento. The already unbearably long shifts of the last few weeks have been further extended. It is strange to think that the province of Caltanissetta whose area company started in the same period as that of our province, has communicated that it will be able to distribute water with shifts of four times a week.

Many interventions have stigmatized the lack of activities such as maintenance and cleaning of the reservoirs, the lack of testing of the same which does not allow these reserves to be filled to the brim during the period in which the resource is abundant, the continuous losses in transmission to the Municipalities and the losses of the distribution network. Added to the sieve pipes are the abusive and fraudulent withdrawals, the failure to install hydrometric meters and the many flat-rate supplies that allow abuses of all kinds. It is necessary to redo the water and sewerage networks which are now more than dilapidated, the emergency spending policy usually allows spend without planning and to obtain immediate results which always prove to be ephemeral. In 2012 the Porto Empedocle watermaker for which we had asked the Region to entrust it to the super-scope company to have it when it would be needed efficiently.

Unfortunately it has been abandoned and today it would need to be rebuilt, however in a timeframe that is not suitable for current needs. The desire to contribute to all initiatives useful for accelerating the resolution of problems relating to the Integrated Water Service was reiterated. The Executive expresses its condolences and sympathy for the death at work of the young worker from Canicattì.

This grave loss is also added to the tragic accidents at work whose causes, when investigated, are to be found in the lack of training, prevention and safety culture. The Uil with the campaign “Zero deaths at work” continues to solicit consciences and push for more stringent regulations that also reach the crime of homicide.
