The staffing emergency of the Penitentiary Police in the prisons of Busto Arsizio and Varese (in the photo) is far from resolved. The other day the announcement of the arrival of new agents shortly, 17 in Busto and 6 in Varese. “But the reinforcements – says Pierpaolo Giacovazzo, regional secretary of UilPa Penitentiary Police – do not reinforce anything”. Giacovazzo yesterday in Milan with colleagues from other unions met with the Superintendent of the Penitentiary Administration bringing the problems to the table: overcrowding, lack of police personnel and alarm situation created by aggressive prisoners to be placed outside the region or in suitable structures.

The discussion also concerned the inclusion of new agents in Lombard prisons. “Numbers in hand – notes Giacovazzo – in Busto Arsizio with 430 inmates 17 new agents are destined, freshly trained from the courses, but in July 17 agents will leave, to which we must add three colleagues who will leave for retirement. So where are the reinforcements? The reality is this: there are no increases in forces that we need and we have been saying this for some time, there are 125 officers in Busto but twenty of them are missing to operate as best as possible, but this time we will have them, the balance remains negative” .

Even in Varese, although the prison is smaller, the staff is still struggling: the arrival of 6 officers is expected, three less than necessary. Giacovazzo notes another problem: “In July the new officers arrive who have no experience but in Busto Arsizio it will be difficult to support them in the new path in a structure they don’t know from which 17 policemen have requested the transfer”.
