Municipality of Pesaro: Against sun and dust

It opens on Friday 5th July (12pm) at L. Sorbini Paleontological Museum of Fiorenzuola di Focarathe seventh episode of the Pesaro 2024 project – Italian Capital of Culture ‘From sculptures in the city to community art’ curated by Marcello Smarrelli, which involves the 12 Districts and the Municipality of Monteciccardo throughout the year, developing the relationship between the arts and public space as its thematic focus.

Hero Cyprien Gaillard con ‘Against Sun and Dust‘, edited by Cornelia Mattiacci, Alessandra Castelbarco Albani e Ruggero Pietromarchi, dedicated to District 6 – San Bartolo. The intervention is divided into a double proposal. At the “L. Sorbini Paleontological Museum” in Fiorenzuola di Focara the experimental video of the No Text Azienda studio, created in dialogue with Gaillard, can be seen; the short film will evolve over the course of the project, will be made in two stages, between July and September and will be available during the opening hours of the Museum, whose collection is characterized by the heritage of fossils from the Monte Castellaro deposit (San Bartolo) . The exhibition in the rooms of Villa Imperiale is the artist’s first solo show in Italy since 2012, and first exhibition in the Marche; in Gaillard’s perspective, the villa is investigated as a “natural monolith” which has persisted, like an outsized find, within the San Bartolo park since 1400. The exhibition develops inside the Rovere wing and in the open spaces of the Villa, and will be open to visitors from 6 July to 26 October on the opening days of Villa Imperiale (Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning). Along with new and recent works by Gaillard, the route includes an unpublished sound work by Ihor Okuniev.

Responding to the general theme of Pesaro 2024 “The Nature of Culture”, Cyprien Gaillard’s intervention investigates the meaning of occupation and human transformation of natural space, the preservation of architectural and geological stratification, the cultural and physical lacerations left by the rise and decline of historical or contemporary utopias. The research developed by investigating the San Bartolo area and expanding the perspective from the local to the national and international scale. At Gaillard’s invitation, the project sees the participation of the Ukrainian multimedia artist Ihor Okuniev and the Milan-based direction and videomaking studio No Text Azienda. The intervention is the result of an exploration of the natural and cultural memory of the Renaissance complex of Villa Imperiale – the inspiring fulcrum of the event Against Sun and Dust, this year in its fifth edition – of the landscape and geological heritage of the San Bartolo Natural Park as well as the economic-social legacy of that building and entrepreneurial boom which reached its peak in the 90s through the phenomenon defined as Riviera Club Culture.
