The press conference organized by Fials Salerno outside the Umberto I hospital in Nocera Inferiore was held today at 11:00. The event was attended by the top management of Fials Salerno and numerous workers in the healthcare sector, united to discuss the serious working conditions and structural deficiencies that are putting the quality of healthcare offered to citizens at risk.

Carlo Lopopolo, secretary general of Fials Salerno, opened the conference by underlining the urgency of addressing current issues: “The current situation is unsustainable. The excessive workload, grueling shifts and lack of rest are having a devastating impact on the health and well-being of healthcare workers. We cannot continue to ask our operators to perform miracles without guaranteeing them the minimum conditions to carry out their work safely”.

During the meeting, numerous contractual violations and chronic staff shortages were highlighted, which exposes both healthcare workers and patients to serious health risks. “We have a staff shortage that is no longer sustainable. It is urgent to intervene to avoid very serious consequences on the minimum level of assistance, essential for our community”, added Lopopolo.

With the arrival of summer and the consequent increase in holidays, the situation risks getting even worse. Lopopolo warned: “If extraordinary and timely measures are not adopted, we will find ourselves faced with mergers or, even worse, the closure of departments. This is unacceptable”.

The provincial Fials expressed strong concern over the lack of concrete responses from the health management of the Salerno ASL and the failure to comply with the regulations governing overtime hours. “Once again, the burden of these shortcomings falls on the operators, who continue to guarantee services and healthcare thanks to their immense spirit of sacrifice and self-sacrifice. This cannot go on like this”, declared Lopopolo.

The sit-in, scheduled from 10 am to 1 pm at the hospital entrance/parking lot, was attended by a large and enthusiastic number of people. Lopopolo concluded the press conference with an appeal to the institutions: “It is essential that the competent authorities take note of the gravity of the situation and adopt concrete and immediate measures to guarantee dignified and safe working conditions for our staff, as well as an adequate minimum level of care for our patients. We cannot wait any longer”.
