PALERMO – Three winners and one finalist of the tournament have signed up for the qualifiers of the 35th edition of the Palermo Ladies Open, scheduled from 13 to 21 July on the fields of the Country Time Club.
The entry list of the minor draw is led by the Russian Erika Andreeva n. 99 in the world and is closed by the 38-year-old American of Uzbek origin, Varvara Lepchenko, 206 in the ranking but with a best ranking of no. 19.
In the list there are also 3 absolute protagonists of the latest editions of the Country tournament: the Swiss Jill Teichmann (197 in the ranking) who triumphed in 2019 against the Dutch Kiki Bertens, the French Fiona Iron (156), who won in 2020 over Estonian Anett Kontaveit, and Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (127) who won the title in 2022 in the final over the Italian Lucia Bronzetti.
Another Romanian protagonist at the Country will also take part in the qualifiers: Elena Gabriela Rusefinalist in the 2021 edition, when she was defeated in 2 sets by the American Danielle Collins.
Towards the main scoreboard
The qualifying matches of the 35th Palermo Ladies Open will be played on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July. There will be 6 places up for grabs in the main draw.
The only blue ones present in which will be the Wild Cards Delilah Spiteri (305) e Aurora Zantedeschi (391), both at home at Country (they train in Francesco Cinà’s Academy). The other WCs were assigned to the Maltese Francesca Curmi and the 18 year old Serbian, Mia Ristic.
The main draw is, however, led by Ukraine Elina Svitolina, former n. 3 in the world and current no. 21 in the ranking, followed by the Chinese Yue Yuan (38) and Xinyu Wang (40). There are four Italians in the main draw. Two more Wild Cards available to the tournament director, who reveals that he has started “interesting negotiations to bring a top ten to Palermo”.
“It is yet another confirmation of the quality of a tournament that always attracts great interest – underlined the president of the club, Giorgio Cammarata, and the director of the tournament, Oliviero Palma –. There will be a great battle and, above all, a great show starting from the qualifiers with players like Begu, Teichmann, Ferro and Ruse”.
