PALERMO – Trial to be redone for the deaths at the Palermo shipyard. The Supreme Court annulled with postponement the acquittal of the former director of the Fincantieri plant, Giuseppe Cortesi.






Some charges are now time-barred and will therefore only be prosecuted in civil proceedings. For others, however, the maximum time limit has not expired and a new appeal process will be held.

For Antonino Cipponerialso a former director, swill continue only in civil proceedings. There was a third former director accused, Luciano Lemetti, but he has since died.

Therefore, the appeals of the relatives of the victims were accepted, assisted by lawyers Fabio Lanfranca, Salvatore Cacioppo and Serena Romano, of Inail and Fiom CGIL assisted by the lawyer Fausto Maria Amato.

The defendants are charged with multiple manslaughter. According to the prosecution, they did not adopt the precautions required by law for asbestos processing, resulting in the death of 21 workers.

The one that has reached the Court of Cassation is one of many trials to the former top management of Fincantieri Palermo for the death, over the years, of hundreds of workers who fell ill with pleural mesothelioma and asbestosis due to contact with asbestos fibres.
