Tension this morning inside the Burranca hotel, in via San Basilio in Quartu Sant’Elena, where around seventy migrants are hosted.
One of these, a young man of 18, for reasons to be clarified, grabbed a knife and injured his arms. Another 25-year-old migrant intervened to stop him and was also injured.
The Carabinieri of the Quartu Company immediately arrived on site and are dealing with the case, as well as the 118 ambulances which transported the two injured people to the Monserrato Polyclinic with a yellow code assigned.
«These kids have a difficult situation – comments a manager of the Amal association, which manages the structure – And we are left completely alone. These are young people who have now lost their welcome but we don’t feel like leaving them on the streets, risking them becoming prey to crime, drug dealing and so on.”
«What happened is just the tip of the iceberg – he continues – there would instead be a lot to tell about what these migrants experience and how we, as an association, try in every way to support them. They have a very difficult experience behind them, and they live waiting for the outcome of a commission that decides their future. We try not to leave them alone, we allow them to stay in the rooms of the Burranca hotel, after all they have no point of reference. For us, helping them also means respecting them: almost all of them come from Afghanistan and Iran, and are mostly problematic, with terrible diagnoses, we offer them meals suited to their traditions, their religion and their habits, we agree on a weekly menu. In short, we do everything we can to help them regain a dignity that they often no longer have. There are more than 35 who have a job, and in this case too we provide them with support from a contractual point of view.”
«Humanity – concludes the head of the Amal association – is the watchword for us. Let’s not condemn these kids a priori – is the invitation -, let’s go further and try to understand from which context they come and that without those who take care of them they only see a dark future”.
